July 2013 - Red Nose Foundation

Their World Through Their Lens

Photography is a fun and creative activity for the kids to experiment with, which is why we started the Kids With Cameras photography program. Armed with the few digital cameras that have been donated to the program so far, the RNF kids wandered through their village in search of subjects to photograph, keeping in mind the first bits of photographic theory they had just learnt. The results were pleasantly surprising and extremely encouraging, and are online for every one to see.

Head to our Flickr site to see photos taken by the kids in both Cilincing and Bintaro Lama.

Aside from being fun and creative, photography is also a powerful means of communication: it is a method of visual expression; it captures events, objects, places and people in time; it allows the photographer to document a story, and share that story with others. Through this project – Kids With Cameras – we hope to give our young photographers the opportunity to experience the fun and story telling abilities of photography for themselves.

Do you have an old digital camera you’re ready to part with? Donate it to the Kids With Cameras project.
Each camera donated to the program will be assigned an ID number; all of the photographs that are uploaded to Flickr will be tagged with the corresponding camera ID so that their former owner can search for photographs that have been taken with their camera since parting with it.

Encore! The Festival of Laughs is on Again

On September 14, the Red Nose Foundation will present the second Hidung Merah Festival of Laughs and Charity Auction gala benefit.

Hosted at the Le Meridien hotel’s grand ballroom, all of our guests will get to enjoy a four course finely prepared meal menu, and a range of entertainment, including live music, a charity auction, and a variety of comedic acts, such as Septian Dwi Cahyo and Improvindo. Of course, there will also be a performance by the one and only Hidung Merah Performance Troupe.

Sophisticated, fun, and for a good cause, this much anticipated fundraising event will be attended by some of the city’s most privileged and charitable personalities. Every rupiah raised will go to ensuring that the Red Nose Foundation can continue making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children in Jakarta.

During the month of August, tickets are: Rp. 900,000 per person or Rp. 6,800,000 for 1 Table (8 pax). If one night of comedy isn’t enough, buy the early bird special and get a ticket to the Festival of Laughs and the Jakarta Comedy Club in August for Rp. 1,100,000.

Contact us on info@rednosefoundation.org to book tickets or for more information.

Wawan Represents Indonesia at Wheel2013

Wawan & Dan

On July 11, 2013, Wawan became the first Indonesian ever to compete at Wheel2013, and on an apparatus he’d only first laid eyes on a couple of weeks prior to the competition. RNF’s founder and executive director, Dan Roberts, travelled to Chicago to cheer on the 18-year-old. Here, Dan recounts what it was like to witness one of his first and oldest students compete in an international competition in the city where he himself learnt to appreciate the power of circus.

Preparing a trip for one student to spend four months in the United States has been an expensive venture in terms of simple dollar signs, but also in terms of time and effort spent on setting everything up. In fact, when Wawan returns to Jakarta and all is said and done, this trip will have cost Red Nose nearly an entire months budget of programming in Indonesia.

So the question is, Why? Why one student, why Wawan and why bother?
